Exploring Mobile Augmented Reality Navigation System for Pedestrians

Mobile augmented reality has been introduced rapidly through various mobile applications ever since smart phones became widespread. Geographic information system applications, especially those using location based service, have adapted this new computer vision technology, but current mobile AR applications which contain POI data only display location information. This forces the user to switch from an AR view to a conventional 2-dimensional view in order to receive continuous spatial information that covers a user's entire route. This paper will use a scenario-based approach and propose a solution that will provide linear spatial data, particularly route information, in mobile augmented reality applications.

This conference paper was published in the GISRUK 2012.

Augmented reality: UCL in Layar

Layar has become a major platform for individual mobile augmented reality application developers.
Here is a video clip showing University College London (UCL) buildings in Layar.
In order to put UCL building information into Layar, I stored location information for each UCL building, as well as images, website, and phone numbers on my server.
This is a good example to show how mobile augmented reality should be combined with Location Based Service (LBS).

Augmented Reality: Augmented Traffic Views

This augmented reality application shows how augmented reality can be used for ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) in contrast to the last few augmented reality applications, which give you information about restaurants and buidlings. The augmented traffic views application shows you current traffic scenes from traffic monitoring cameras. The application augments points of traffic monitoring cameras which are located near you. It basically works with GPS and a digital compass. According to the video clip it displays traffic monitoring camera scenes remarkably fast.
